Caltragirone<\/strong> is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily.<\/p>\n

It is the fifth most populous municipality in the metropolitan city and the first by territorial extension. It is the 23rd municipality in Sicily by population and the fifth by extension.<\/p>\n

It has been a bishopric since 1816. It is at the head of a vast and historic district of the province of Catena, the Calatino,<\/p>\n

located in the entire southern part of the current metropolitan body. the climate is generally humid,<\/p>\n

also due to the fact that it is located on the watershed between the plain of Gela and the plain of Catania.<\/p>\n

(170 km) Its name derives from the Arabic Kalaf-al-ghiran which means “castle of the caves”.<\/p>\n

Caltagirone is renowned throughout the world for the production of ceramics which can often be seen in various parts of the city such as for example in the Villa, the public garden adorned with sparkling majolica,<\/p>\n

in the Terrace also decorated with colorful ceramics, with a beautiful little building next to it with steps and balustrades all covered with majolica reliefs, which houses the State Museum of Ceramics,<\/p>\n

The visit continues with Piazza del Municipio and at the end of it a very long flight of steps called the “staircase”, on top of which stands the eighteenth-century church of Santa Maria del Monte,<\/p>\n

where the image of the Madonna di Conadomini is venerated. The spectacular staircase covered with polychrome majolica tiles by local potters, summarizes the spirit of Caltagirone,<\/p>\n

it joins the upper city to the lower city and was built in 1608 by the architect Giuseppe Giacalone.
