SELINUNTE<\/h2>\n

(42 km away) Selinunte was founded by the inhabitants of Megara Hyblea in 628 BC. and it was the westernmost of the Greek colonies. Its name seems to derive from the wild parsley that the Greeks indicated as selinon, which widely covers this area of Sicily.<\/p>\n

Initially an ally of Carthage, after the battle of Himera it was linked to Syracuse, to which it always remained faithful. Due to the frequent disputes with Segesta, this one, in 409 B.C. he invoked the help of Carthage which sent a powerful army that destroyed Selinunte.<\/p>\n

There are three Eastern Temples and they are referred to as temple G, F, E: temple G is the largest in Selinunte and the fourth largest among all Greek architectures, temple F is the one that has undergone the most looting, the temple G was the one dedicated to Juno. Continuing along a small road you go up to the Acropolis, an irregular clearing facing the sea to the south, enclosed by grandiose fortification walls which also defended the main access gate to the city, where one can see, among others, temples O and A which are the most recent of the Acropolis, and temple C which is the oldest of the Acropolis.<\/p>\n<\/div>
