Classical representations From 8 May to 5 July

They are one of the pride of the Greek culture of the city. The classical shows are organized by INDA,

the national institute of ancient drama and have been organized for more than 100 years since the first edition of the shows dates back to 1914.

Except for normal use within the tour of the Archaeological Area, the auditorium of the theater is used for concerts or official awards. The first cycle of classical shows opened on April 16, 1914 with Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, the great Athenian tragic poet in which that day was represented one of his classic works, Le Etnee, composed to celebrate the refoundation of the city of Catania. Partecipate the ancient Greek tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles or Euripides, in the same scenario where they were held in classical times, is in fact a unique and very suggestive experience.

In addition to the Syracusans, there are many tourists who fill the cavea of the Greek theater to watch the theatrical performances. The theater is part of city life. But what makes the Syracuse theater special is its history. Syracuse, in fact, was the seat of a prestigious theatrical life, famous since ancient times for its liveliness and for the contributions it gave to the history of the theater. Even if not all spectators know it, going to the theater under the sun means renewing an ancient rite: in Greece, shows were performed during the day.

The Greek theater of Syracuse

It’s the oldest stone-built theater in the Neapolis Archaeological Park. In addition to being the oldest, the theater of Syracuse exceeds in size all Sicilian theaters. The institution is famous for organizing the so-called “classical representations” of Greek tragedies and comedies, following the dictates of tradition.
