ETNA
(At 245 km) Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe with its over 3000 meters in height and one of the largest in the world. The subaerial volcanic eruptions covered the submarine eruptions, which began about 600,000 years ago,
so today it is possible to see part of the very ancient activity in Pleistocene clay outcrops even at 700 meters above sea level.
In this variegated universe that is Etna, in its slopes sloping down to the sea, there are woods, parks, orchards, vineyards, villages and towns. It is an integral part of the human environment,
and this is demonstrated by the presence of Catania placed at its base and of all the other countries rooted on its slopes. All human settlements bear the distinctive mark of the volcano: palaces and churches show black lava stone ornaments, the streets are often paved with compact lava slabs that draw long black stripes.
