Marsala

(77 km away) Marsala is an Italian city of 82,390 inhabitants in the Province of Trapani, on the western coast of Sicily. Its name comes from the Arabic “Marsa Allah”, literally “Port of God”. It is famous above all because the production of the fortified wine of the same name takes place in its lands, but it also owes much of its fame to the landing of Garibaldi, which took place here in May 1860 during the Expedition of the Thousand.

In its 250 square km of extension it has a rich cultural and landscape heritage, in its territory it includes, for example, the regional nature reserve of the Stagnone Islands of Marsala.

To visit the small island of Mozia, today San Pantaleo, is an island of the Stagnone of Marsala. The ancient Phoenician city of the same name was located on the island. The island is located off the western coast of Sicily, between Isola Grande and the mainland, and belongs to the Whitaker Foundation.
